Use the free Roland mobile studio app to capture new ideas

Inspiration for a song can pop up whether or not your full studio is available, and Roland has a solution for those impromptu sessions. The music pioneer has presented a free Zentracker app for Android and iOS that serves as a multitrack recorder for spontaneous performances. You can add unlimited tracks (four by default for simplicity), use 200 audio loops, and use 16 audio effects while using familiar features like beat matching and looping.

You can save tracks to OneDrive, and Google Drive will be “coming soon”. The app is free as long as you have a Roland account, although Roland is pushing you into a cloud subscription by limiting some effects, loop bundles, stem exports, and other features to paying customers. You’ll also likely need a blender like the Go: Mixer Pro-X to get the most out of Zentracker.

There is an app for more formal productions. Roland releases a TR Editor desktop app (below) that serves as a companion for machines like the TR-6S and TR-8S. You can browse sounds, program beats and optimize parameters from the comfort of your computer screen. While we wait for the launch details as we write this, the software could come in handy if you find the TR-series user interface too cumbersome.
