The Dark Mofo Festival has government support, but the creative director is questioning the future of the event

The city of Hobart and the Tasmanian government are once again supporting the Dark Mofo Festival in 2021, however Dark Mofo’s creative director Leigh Carmichael has questioned the future of the festival.

Hobart City staff provide a wealth of expertise to keep the festival running smoothly. As part of the sponsorship agreement 2021, the city of Hobart is supporting the winter festival with kitchens and tables as well as other festival equipment. They also provide the following event support:

  • Town hall for a performance called Towards A Great Silence
  • Parking on the regatta site
  • The Burning Ogah-Ogah is burning on the regatta grounds
  • Nude bathing at the solstice in Longbeach, Sandy Bay
  • Winter festival and Salamanca lawn

Tasmania’s Minister for Hospitality and Events, Sarah Courtney, advises: “Dark Mofo has been a cultural beacon in Tasmania since its inception in 2013, bringing locals out of hibernation and attracting visitors to the state during the traditionally quiet winter months.

The Tasmanian government is backing this iconic festival with a funding agreement that will provide $ 10.5 million over five years through 2021.

Minister Courtney added: “Having been canceled in 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19, I am delighted that this year’s event will return in spectacular style.

“Dark Mofo is one of Tasmania’s most popular annual events, growing year by year, making a significant contribution not only to Tasmania’s tourism and hospitality industries, but also to local contractors for manufacturing, construction and leasing contracts.”

However, as reported in the ABC, the future of the Dark Mofo festival remains uncertain late Tuesday, Tasmania’s health director Mark Veitch confirmed the state would not relax its borders with the greater Melbourne area in time for the week-long winter festival.

Typically, interstate tourists make up 65% of all ticket sales, and around 80% of those are bought exclusively by travelers from Melbourne.

Prior to COVID, Melbourne tourist ticket sales alone generated around $ 2 million in festival revenue, totaling $ 11 million in 2019 – about $ 8 million more since the festival began in 2013.

Dark Mofo’s creative director Leigh Carmichael said in a statement, “In response to COVID-19 restrictions, we have radically reduced the number of shows with tickets and reduced the risk of border closings. We have moved more towards the free Art program focused. ” that allows more flexibility when changing dates. “

Carmichael said he expected the festival to be “probably okay” despite lacking the typical Melbourne crowds, adding, “It has always been a festival for Tasmanians primarily to celebrate winter, and the longest night in the Year in Australia. “

When asked what the future of Dark Mofo would be, Carmichael said the festival in its current format was being reviewed.
