Texas A&M Part of the new A&M system Confirming support for National Guard and Reserve personnel
Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp recently signed a statement of support for the National Guard and Reserves at the Sam Houston Sanders Corps Center on the Texas A&M University campus.
The statement comes from the Austin-based Texas Committee of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a program of the US Department of Defense.
By signing the statement, Sharp reaffirmed A&M System’s commitment to recognize and honor Guard and Reserve personnel and to comply with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). The declaration is also a pledge to provide managers and supervisors with the tools they need to effectively manage those serving in the Guards and Reserves and to encourage enlistment of Guardsmen, Reservists and Veterans.
“We are pleased to once again demonstrate our commitment to the employees of Texas A&M System who proudly serve in the Guard and Reserve,” said Sharp.
He noted that in 2021, the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service was one of only 15 organizations in the country to receive the ESGR Freedom Award for outstanding support to Guard and Reserve personnel.
“By signing a statement of support this year, we hope to provide another example to employers and organizations across Texas of the vital role our Guard and Reserves play in our national defense,” Sharp said.
The US Department of Defense established ESGR in 1972 to increase cooperation and understanding between reserve service members and their civilian employers and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee’s military engagement. More than 3,000 volunteers across the country and three US territories serve employers, Guards and Reserves members, and their families through the program.
“In signing a statement of support, the Texas A&M University System joins a cadre of Fortune 500 companies, state and federal government agencies and thousands upon thousands of American employers in demonstrating their support for our armed forces,” said David Blackorby, Chairman the Texas ESGR Committee.
