Submissions for the Material Design Awards 2021 are now open

Google today opened submissions for the Material Design Awards 2021. Now in its seventh year, the company is looking for apps with great dark themes, big screens, and movement implementations.

This year we’re looking for products that use Material Design to deliver more dynamic, personal experiences through movement, big-screen design experiences, and expressive implementations of Dark Theme.

Original 6/21: The MDAs were first launched in 2015 and are hosted by Google Design. There are three categories – compared to four in previous years – and should be available again for apps on all platforms (Android, iOS, web). Submissions must use Material Design and “have been published or updated between July 2020 and October 2021”.

This is a self-nomination – although the form is not currently available – with a deadline of October 1, 2021. The winners of the Material Design Awards 2021 will be announced in December. They will receive a trophy – “with an approximate retail value of up to $ 4,000 each” – and will be promoted on Google’s social channels.


Update 09/25: Before the submission window closes next month (October 1st), Google is bidding another price. The three winners “will be invited to speak to our designers on the phone to explore our latest update, including how Material You can be personalized”. This is significant because Google did not fully describe MY for third party developers beyond a session at I / O 2021. It is unclear when the Material Design team intends to do this publicly for everyone else.


Dark theme

For 2021, we’re looking for products that are both beautiful and legible day and night, and that carefully use colors and contrasts to create a harmonious and personal brand experience.

Big display

How your design adapts is just as important as what adapts: we look for products whose interfaces embody adaptability – from layouts to components – across device types and screen sizes, while remaining true to their unique identity, personality and functionality .

Move

This year we’re looking for products that are brought to life through elegant animation that makes the complex seem simple and expresses style and brand with ease.
