NBP system still not recovered after cyber attack
KARACHI: The National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) has yet to restore its banking system after it collapsed on Saturday following a cyberattack from an unknown source that could result in delays in the salaries of officials and government employees, among other things.
According to NBP sources privy to the development, the banking system admitted a malware attack and has since collapsed. A team of technical experts is trying to resolve the matter but has not been successful so far, the sources added.
Tax collection and the payment of pensions suffer from the hiccups in the system. Since it is a national bank, the system has been down nationwide and its services are being phased out everywhere, the sources said. The NBP reported a cyberattack on Saturday that is being investigated, confirmed the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), adding that no financial loss or data breach was observed.
The central bank further clarified that no other bank had reported such an incident. “NBP has reported a cybersecurity incident that is being investigated. NBP has not identified any data breach or financial loss, ”the central bank said on its official Twitter handle. The SBP is closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of the banking system, she added.
