Minecraft will require a Microsoft account from March 2022

Minecraft users playing the Java version of the popular game will be required to use a Microsoft account to play the game as of March 2022.

Microsoft, which has owned Minecraft since 2014, announced the migration in October 2020. The company’s original plan was to make Microsoft accounts mandatory in 2021, but the change has been delayed. The Java version is one of the two main versions of Minecraft.

So far, players playing the Java version can use a Mojang account or a Microsoft account to do so. Mojang, the original developer of Minecraft, continued to work on the game after the acquisition.

As of March 10, 2022, Minecraft can only be played using a Microsoft account. Microsoft allegations that millions of Minecraft Java players have already migrated their accounts to a Microsoft account. Gamers will also benefit from the move, as Microsoft says its own account system offers benefits like support for two-factor authentication over Mojang’s account system.

Parents may also gain greater control over their children’s gaming activities, provided they manage their children’s Microsoft accounts.

All data will be migrated and all content and functionality will remain the same, according to Microsoft. Players get a free special cave once they move the account. According to Microsoft, the entire migration should only take “a few minutes”; Much of this depends on whether a Microsoft account is already in use or needs to be created from scratch.

Minecraft players using multiple Legacy or Mojang accounts will need to create individual Microsoft accounts for each of their classic accounts. Options are provided to log into one of these accounts.

You can check those official FAQ for more details on migration.

closing words

The move primarily benefits Microsoft, as it can drop support for Mojang accounts and not have to maintain them once the migration is complete. Players who for some reason do not wish to migrate to a Microsoft account will no longer be able to play the official versions of Minecraft since using a Microsoft account will be mandatory from March 10, 2022.

Now you: Do you play Minecraft?
