Huawei EMUI 12 & Honor Magic UI 5.0 update tracker

New updates will be added at the end of this story …

The original story (published October 30, 2021) follows:

Last year, Huawei sold its sub-brand Honor after the former was blacklisted by the US. The company is now owned and controlled by the Chinese government.

This came as a surprise to many, but it meant that Honor could continue to sell smartphones in the US, using Qualcomm’s hardware and Google’s software.

Even so, in this tracker we will keep an eye on the upcoming EMUI 12 update for Huawei phones and the Magic UI 5.0 update for Honor smartphones.

Even after the US ban on Huawei in 2019, the Chinese company remains one of the largest smartphone manufacturers. Since they can no longer use Google’s Android, Huawei has switched to its own operating system called Harmony OS.

However, Huawei is not finished with its Android skin EMUI. The company recently released EMUI 12, which includes much-needed tweaks and UI upgrades.

Huawei said the new version of EMUI will roll over to devices in the first half of 2022, with plans to upgrade phones from 2018. The announcement was made during the APAC launch stream on YouTube on October 28th.

The live stream also revealed which phones would receive the EMUI 12 update. Huawei’s latest user interface focuses on a clean and minimalist user interface, while the Device + feature focuses on tight integration of Huawei products.

Huawei has also revised the quick settings and introduced a so-called “Control Panel”, with which users can access everything with just one swipe. Another notable feature the upgrade will bring is Huawei’s Distributed File System, which enables devices to seamlessly exchange files.

With that in mind, here is a list of eligible Huawei devices that will receive the update to EMUI 12.

Magic UI 5.0 tracker

After separating from its parent company Huawei, Honor wanted to make a name for itself and highlight its smartphone user interface. And it looks like the Shenzen-based company is finally doing it.

Rumor has it that Honor is working on its own Android skin, Magic UI 5.0. The leak comes from the renowned Leakster Digital Chat Station. However, it is very unlikely that the new version will be based on Android 12, as the leak already occurred in April.

#DigitalChatStation Huawei’s next new phone runs on Hongmeng OS, and the new Honor phone runs on MagicUI 5.0 based on the lower layer of Android 11. Some models before Honor’s division have been tested internally by Hongmeng, but the latter are not good enough.

Honor recently released their first smartphones after separating from Huawei with the Honor 50 and Honor 50 Lite. Unsurprisingly, the phones come with Google Mobile Services so Honor can pick up where it left off two years ago.

We’ll add the list of eligible devices or the table once Honor has confirmed the devices that will receive the update.
